My way to Animal Angels Foundation

WHO AM I?

I am Aakash Lonkar - Director - Animal Angels Foundation.

Animal Angels Foundation is founded by Minal Kavishwar who is a clinical psychologist and Animal Assisted Therapy practitioner and trainer.

WHAT DO I DO?

Animal Angels Foundation is a registered NGO working in the field of Animal Assisted Therapy . We train dogs as Therapy dogs who accompany us as co therapist. We work in settings like special schools, hospitals, old age homes. Where these dogs help people in their emotional and mental wellness.

HOW “ANIMAL ASSISTED THERAPY” CAN HELP THOSE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS?

We work with children and adults with developmental disabilities. AAT is very beneficial for such children. Animals are non-judgemental and provide unconditional love and acceptance which helps these children to build a bond with the dog.

AAT is a goal oriented therapy, where we work on goals like, improving eye contact, improving motor coordination, improving social skills, improving speech etc

WHAT INSPIRES ME TO DO THE WORK I DO?

The joy and happiness which we see these children experience and their parents because of the Therapy Dogs, inspires us to work more in the field of Animal Assisted Therapy. To spread unconditional love and happiness through Human-Animal interaction, is our goal.

WHAT IS MY FAVOURITE MEMORY RELATED TO MY WORK?

My favourite memory is that of a 5 year old child with autism who started making eye contact with his mother sometimes and started smiling because of a Therapy dog which otherwise, the child never did.

CAN WORKING WITH ANIMALS BE A CAREER CHOICE FOR YOUNG AUTISTIC ADULTS?

It can be a career option for young autistic adults. Dog handling, grooming or dog walking can be career options.

We are not yet providing vocational training in this field but it is an option we are considering.

Thank you

Aakash Lonkar
